The atelier,
on the bench.
Z FEMME, LLC is a design atelier headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina — organized to draft every commission to the client's measure.
Why this
atelier.
Z FEMME, LLC was organized around a premise borrowed from tailoring: the best design is the one made to measure. Off-the-rack thinking produces off-the-rack work — the atelier exists for commissions that need to be drafted, not picked.
Four disciplines run under one pattern standard: interior design and decorating for the spaces clients occupy; industrial design for the objects clients manufacture; graphic and commercial art for the images clients present; and fashion and product design across clothing, costume, float, fur, jewelry, lighting, shoe and textile lines.
The Charlotte atelier is the drafting room of record — briefs, pattern files, specs and sign-offs kept under one roof. The measure behind the make.
"The brief is the measure, the draft is the pattern, the sign-off is the fitting — everything else is muslin."
Z Femme · Founding premisePrinciples of
the pattern.
Six commitments that apply to every commission in the atelier.
Measured brief
Every commission starts with a signed brief — scope, deliverables, revision rounds and fees documented before the first draft.
Drafted spec
Drawings with dimensions, palettes with codes, specs a maker can cut from — the file is the deliverable, not the mood board.
Fitted sign-off
Deliverables close on the client's written approval — a design isn't done until the file records the fit.
Rounds marked
Revision rounds are scoped in the brief — additional rounds are priced, not negotiated mid-project.
Patterns handed over
Source files belong to the client on sign-off — the maker gets a buildable package, not a locked presentation.
Makers consulted
Fabrication constraints checked during design, not after — the pattern exists because someone has to cut from it.
